This morning, I had the privilege of joining Mike Ferguson in the Morning on NewsTalk STL for a thought-provoking segment at 8:35 AM. We tackled a topic that may sound more like a philosophy seminar than a criminal justice briefing—pro-mortalism—and explored how it intersects with the world of crime and criminology.

What exactly is pro-mortalism? It’s a controversial philosophical stance that suggests death is preferable to continued life—an ideology that, when absorbed into subcultures or exploited by nihilistic influencers, can breed criminal pathology, violence, and anti-social behavior. We explored how this bleak worldview is not just a thought experiment, but increasingly present in real-world cases—from online radicalization to mass shootings rooted in despair and detachment.
In our discussion, I broke down:
The rise of fatalistic ideologies in digital echo chambers
The criminological risks of detachment from faith, family, and formation
How law enforcement and public policy must adapt to counter this growing threat
As always, my lens is one of applied criminology, rooted in experience, ethics, and a clear-eyed understanding of human behavior when it loses moral grounding.
Thank you to Mike Ferguson and the team at NewsTalk STL for the opportunity to shed light on a growing cultural contagion. Give it a listen, and let me know your thoughts.
