In today’s digital age, children are more connected than ever before — and more vulnerable. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, nearly 95% of teens now own a smartphone, and over half report being online ‘almost constantly.’ With this constant connectivity comes growing exposure to online predators, mental health risks, and the erosion of boundaries that once helped protect childhood. As a applied criminologist and retired 24 year cop, I’ve seen firsthand how digital environments can amplify real-world dangers. But we’re not powerless — in fact, we’re just getting started in this fight to protect and preserve what matters most: our kids.
“My guest this week on the Lou Desmond & Company Show is someone who embodies that mission with passion, personal conviction, and faith. Katie Longhauser is a mother of three, a business owner, and host of the powerful podcast Screen Guardians, which focuses on digital health for children and families. But Katie didn’t start as an expert in this field — she stepped into it after what she describes as a call from God, following years of silent pain and powerful healing. Her story is rooted in tragedy: her twin sister was abused by a trusted coach during high school — a painful truth that only surfaced in college. That trauma fueled a fire within Katie to become a voice for change, not just in classrooms and homes, but in state law.
“From collaborating with organizations like Screensanity to launching her own advocacy efforts through Kids Digital Health Hub, Katie has emerged as a bold and compassionate leader in a space that desperately needs it. She’s here tonight to talk about how we can educate, empower, and most importantly, protect the next generation in a world dominated by screens.”
