The America’s Criminologist Podcast for September 20, 2024

This week, I want to spend time discussing the DEI in American law enforcement as well as a discussion on De-Annexation. Also available on Substack.

Welcome to the America’s Criminologist Podcast for September 20, 2024. This is Dr Currie Myers with some interesting criminal justice news and events that have occurred in the United States recently. My Podcast is brought to you by the Howard Wagyu Ranch. Raised on a family ranch in Central Kansas, Howard Wagyu serves Wagyu beef with the highest quality and excellence. Just go to their Facebook Page and go to Howard Wagyu!

This week I also appeared on the Larry Elder Show with guest host Carl Jackson. For the US Secret Service (formerly one of the finest law enforcement agencies in the world) to not understand the importance of force protection, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design and to understand the threat assessment associated with a particular principal (Trump) is mind boggling to me. In the 1980’s the USSS literally wrote the book on CPTED, force protection, and threat assessments! This is once again a leadership issue and a lack of support and training to the troops in the field. We are better than this my friends!

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) have become prominent pillars in many organizations, including first responder agencies. The goal is to create workplaces that are more inclusive, with a broader range of backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders. But while this idea may sound beneficial in theory, the implementation of DEI policies within first responder agencies, particularly law enforcement, often conflicts with the merit-based principles that should guide these crucial professions. The emphasis on DEI risks sacrificing essential standards, such as physical testing, educational qualifications, background investigations, and strong ethical frameworks. Furthermore, resources dedicated to DEI initiatives and training represent a poor use of time and budgets, especially when evidence suggests these programs are ineffective. Read more about my thoughts here.

De-annexation offers an opportunity for smaller communities to take control of their destiny, enforcing stricter crime policies, improving educational standards, and upgrading essential infrastructure like roads and public services. As urban centers face growing challenges such as rising crime, declining public services, and strained budgets, de-annexation becomes an appealing solution for communities seeking localized governance.  Read more about my thoughts here.
